HED: West Point police seize pot from trucker

WEST POINT – A Central Mississippi truck driver was arrested this weekend after 7 pounds of marijuana were found inside her trailer Friday night.

Daphne D. Smith, 32, of Collins was charged with felony possession of marijuana after it was discovered as she was picking up a load at a West Churchill Road freezer warehouse about 9 p.m. Friday, said West Point Police Chief Bill Ladd.

“This is the most (marijuana) that we’ve seized in quite a while,” Ladd said.

Police and the district attorney’s office have begun forfeiture proceedings on the tractor-trailer Smith was driving. It is owned by an independent trucking company based in Sebastapol, Miss., Ladd said.

Bond had not been set for Smith on Monday evening.
