HED:Guntown sets election to fill aldermanic seat
GUNTOWN – Officials have scheduled a special election May 11 to fill the unexpired term of Harold B. Allen, who died earlier this month.
Allen, 64, who was in the second year of his first term on the Guntown Board of Aldermen, died March 9 at his home following a short illness. He was retired from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.
Candidates for the post will have until May 1 to file a qualifying petition to run in the election. Petitions must bear the names of 15 registered voters in the town.
Blank petitions may be obtained at Town Hall, said Cindy Rawson, town water clerk.
If no candidate receives a majority of votes cast in May 11 balloting, a runoff between the top two would be scheduled later.
Guntown residents who have not previously registered to vote in any federal, state, county or town election or who have not changed registrations since moving to the town will have until April 10 to register for the special election.
People who are already qualified voters of the town do not have to reregister.
The unexpired term will run until July 2001.
