HED:Phelps wins seat in Guntown vote
GUNTOWN – Voters chose Wayne Phelps to fill a vacant seat on the town’s board of alderman in a Tuesday runoff election.
Phelps, who’s retired from Ford Motor Co., received 122 votes to 67 votes for his opponent, retired Baldwyn school teacher Evvie L. Birks.
“I feel great that the people in the city of Guntown have that much confidence in me,” Phelps said after the vote totals were announced Tuesday night.
About a third of the town’s registered voters turned out for the special election runoff to fill the unexpired term of the late Harold Allen, who died in March. The term runs until July 2001.
Phelps and Birks led a field of eight candidates in last week’s special election, when only one vote separated their vote totals.
