HED:Shannon man charged with theft, arson
A Shannon man has been charged in connection with a December 1998 theft and a February 1998 arson fire that destroyed a trailer.
James K. Crawford, 29, of Route 1, Box 216 AB, Shannon, was arrested Tuesday on charges of second-degree arson and grand larceny in two separate cases, said Lt. Terry Jones, Lee County Sheriff’s Department chief investigator.
On Wednesday, Justice Court Judge Pat Carr set a $250,000 bond for Crawford at an afternoon hearing.
Crawford is accused of setting fire to a truck trailer parked near the old Vess Ivy store in Shannon on Feb. 9, 1998, to cover the traces of a break-in, Jones said.
Nothing was taken from the trailer that was loaded with 73 barrels of a flammable resin, Jones said. However, some of the barrels were broken open and used to fuel the arson fire.
Quick response by Shannon and other volunteer fire departments averted a hazardous situation and preserved enough evidence to aid investigators, Jones said.
In the grand larceny case, Crawford is accused of stealing a 14-foot trailer from the Palmetto community in December, Jones said. The trailer was recovered last week in Tupelo and returned to the owner.
