NETTLETON – A Chickasaw County man apparently shot and killed his ex-girlfriend at her Nettleton area home Monday night before turning the gun on himself.

Monroe County sheriff’s deputies found the bodies of Bridgetlyn Blanchard, 28, and Kevin Echols, 22, in the front yard near the door to Blanchard’s 30520 Camarago Road home when they responded to a 9:50 p.m. 911 call, said Alan Gurley, Monroe County coroner.

Based on information from witnesses, investigators believe Echols, of 171 County Road 165, Houston, shot Blanchard following an argument at Blanchard’s home, said Sheriff Ruble Maxey of Monroe County, whose officers are being assisted by the State Highway Patrol’s Criminal Investigation Bureau.

Witnesses told investigators they saw Echols and Blanchard arguing, saw Echols go to his car and then heard shots.

Echols had lived with Blanchard until they broke up about two weeks ago, Maxey said. Officers had no record of prior violent conflicts between Blanchard or Echols, and witnesses did not tell investigators of any prior incidents.

Deputies found a .22-caliber rifle at the scene, and it appears to be consistent with the wounds, Maxey said.

An autopsy was planned for Tuesday night in Jackson, Gurley said.
