HED:Wife charged in death of Shannon soldier
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The wife of a Shannon man stationed at Fort Bragg has been charged with his Jan. 5 murder.
Initially, Anthia E. Merritt told Harnett County, N.C., and FBI investigators that she knew nothing about the shooting death of her husband, Sgt. James A. Merritt of Shannon.
Sgt. Merritt, 34, was found shot twice in the chest in a secluded area of Harnett County, about 15 miles from the U.S. Army base where he was stationed.
During one of several interviews after her husband’s funeral, Anthia Merritt was formally charged with murder on Jan. 15 after she told detectives she shot her husband during a fight over a gun, investigators said.
No bond is set for murder suspects in North Carolina.
A preliminary hearing for Anthia Merritt is scheduled for today.
