HED:Woman convicted in assault on officer

ABERDEEN – A former Monroe County woman was convicted Tuesday of pulling a gun on a sheriff’s deputy in August 1994.

The jury deliberated for 30 minutes before finding Annie Ruth Bogan, 54, who now lives in Tupelo, guilty of aggravated assault of Monroe County Deputy Bobby Edwards, said Assistant District Attorney Rob Coleman, who tried the case with Clay Joyner.

The two-day trial was the second in the case; the first trial ended with a hung jury.

The assault came as Edwards had arrested Bogan after she refused to leave the property she had just been evicted from, Coleman said. While being transported to jail, Bogan pulled a .22 caliber magnum handgun on Edwards and threatened to kill him.

Judge Tommy Gardner is scheduled to sentence Bogan today.
