STARKVILLE – The Starkville Police Department is enforcing the city’s helmet safety ordinance to the tune of $15 per violation.
Police Chief David Lindley tells the Commercial Dispatch that the department officers will be on the lookout for violators. Anyone riding a bike, skateboard, skates or “alternative transportation device” is required to wear a fastened helmet.
Lindley says the ordinance has been on the books for several months but the department had delayed enforcement until the Mississippi State University’s semester was over. He says police didn’t want to start in the middle of a school year.
Lindley says signs are posted on city bike paths to remind cyclists to wear their helmets. Parents will be held accountable for violations on behalf of children under the age of 16.
