HHS student council sponsors health fair

By Chickasaw Journal

HOUSTON – The Houston High School student council is doing their part to promote good health in the community and will sponsor their second annual health fair in conjunction with the Flywheel Festival April 28.

Dr. Elizabeth Harrison is the club sponsor and said she and the students agree that residents of Houston and the surrounding communities need more education on health issues. Harrison began sponsoring the club two years ago and felt it needed to be more prominent in the community.

“We took a long, hard look at ourselves,” Harrison said. “We had to decide who we were and what and where we wanted to be.”

Harrison said she checked with other clubs like Anchor and Beta to see where their focus was and found the perfect opening for the student council in health issues.

“It was like, here’s an area where we can make a difference,” Harrison said.

The club has already sponsored a blood drive and canned food drive through the school and will reprise their health fair in the HHS Commons area during the morning of April 28. They will also host the Topper Trot, a 5K run/walk April 21.

“Those things are about health and when you put them in Houston and the community, it marries it all together,” Harrison said.

Pre-registration for the Topper Trot is being held now and race day registration will be held April 21 beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The health fair will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 28 and will feature information and representatives from agencies to include:

* Houston Police Department

* Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Department

* Chickasaw Emergency Management

* DSH Child Services
