H.W. Byers 74, Coldwater 69

H.W. Byers beats Coldwater, 74-69

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Alexis Hardaway scored 24 points, Justice Martin added 21 and H.W. Byers beat Coldwater 74-69 in the Class 1A MHSAA girls state championship game.

Hardaway made 11 of 14 shots from the field and added 10 rebounds. H.W. Byers (29-4) shot 48.3 percent from the field (28 of 58). Abria Gulledge added 15 points.

Coldwater (27-9) was led by Jerontay Clemons, who scored 40 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. She nearly single-handedly led the Lady Cougars to a comeback victory, scoring 23 points in the fourth quarter, but her late 3-pointer that would have tied the game bounced off the front of the rim.

Charmaine Stackhouse added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Boys 1A championship
Coldwater 68, Biggersville 55

Coldwater beats Biggersville, 68-55

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Jakevin Farmer scored 15 points, grabbed 22 rebounds and blocked seven shots to lead Coldwater to a 68-55 victory Friday over Biggersville in the Class 1A MHSAA boys basketball championship game.

Marcel Hunt added a team-high 19 points while Marcel Newsome scored 15 and Chris Vortis added 11. Coldwater (27-6) outrebounded Biggersville 57-35.

Farmer grabbed eight of Coldwater’s 27 offensive rebounds and shot 7 of 12 from the field.

Biggersville led 24-23 at halftime, but Coldwater used a 22-9 run in the third quarter to take the lead and put the game away.

Biggersville (28-8) was led by Daniel Simmons, who scored 15 points off the bench. Dexter Stafford added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Girls 4A championship
Pontotoc 72, Forrest AHS 68

Pontotoc beats Forrest Co. AHS 72-68 for 4A title

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Quinn Ford scored 28 points, Kayla Russell hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining and Pontotoc rallied to beat Forrest County AHS 72-68 in the Class 4A MHSAA girls state championship game.

Ford made 10 of 16 shots from the field, grabbed 16 rebounds and dished out seven assists, but it was Russell who came up with the biggest shot of the night, banking a 3-pointer high off the glass from the corner to give the Lady Warriors a 71-68 lead. Pontotoc trailed by nine points heading into the fourth quarter.

Pontotoc (34-0) shot 72.7 percent (16 of 22) in the second half. Russell scored 17 points and Nikki McMillian added 12.

Forrest County AHS was led by Samantha Clemts, who scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Kimberly Clemts added 13.

Boys 4A championship
Amanda Elzy 56, Corinth 47

Amanda Elzy beats Corinth 56-47

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Maurice Dunlap and Rahkeem Lehaman both scored 15 points, Jalen Jones added 12 and Amanda Elzy beat Corinth 56-47 in the Class 4A MHSAA boys state championship game.

Amanda Elzy (26-5) fell behind 18-11 after one quarter, but used a 19-2 run in the second quarter to take a 30-20 lead it would never relinquish. Janarius Middleton added five points, 15 rebounds, five assists and five blocked shots.

The Panthers had a 36-30 rebounding advantage and forced 16 Corinth turnovers.

Corinth (29-5) was led by Eric Richardson and Deione Weeks, who each scored 15 points. The Warriors shot just 31.4 percent from the field (16 of 51).
