Amory (3-8) at Itawamba AHS (10-0)
– Playoff seeds: Amory (3-2) is the fourth seed out of Division 4-4A, while Itawamba AHS (5-0) is the Division 1-4A top seed.
– Rankings: Itawamba AHS is the Daily Journal’s top-ranked large school, while Amory is unranked.
– This week: In tonight’s MHSAA Class 4A first-round playoff game, Itawamba takes on a much-improved Amory team that’s become more comfortable on offense since moving some defensive guys over to help out. The winner plays the Center Hill-Elzy winner next week. The game can be heard on WAFM-FM95.7 out of Amory.
– Recent history: Itawamba exploded for 49 first-half points against the Panthers before cruising to a 49-7 win on Aug. 28 in Fulton.
– Amory: QB Forest Williams has completed 50 of 113 passes for 458 yards, 4 TDs and 8 INTs. He has 80 rushes for 330 yards and 3 TDs. … RB Jore’el Freeman has 81 rushing attempts for 335 yards and 3 TDs. He also has 9 catches for 52 yards and 1 TD. … WR Josh Andress has 11 catches for 123 yards and 2 TDs. … LB/DE Channing French has 74 tackles to lead the team. “We move him around on defense,” said Amory defensive assistant coach Bradley Parham.
– Itawamba AHS: The Indians are trying to refocus after playing two draining games against Pontotoc and Shannon, said IAHS head coach Jamie Mitchell. … QB Maikhail Miller has completed 91 of 182 attempts for 1,349 yards, 11 TDs and 5 INTs. … RB Deshawn McGaughy has 115 rushing attempts for 1,110 yards and 15 TDs. … TE Dillon Mitchell has 29 catches for 458 yards and 7 TDs.
Independence (5-6) at Aberdeen (8-2)
– Playoff seeds: Independence (2-3) is the fourth seed out of Division 3-3A, while Aberdeen is the top seed out of Division 2-3A.
– Rankings: Aberdeen is the Daily Journal’s second-ranked Class 3A school.
– This week: Aberdeen is a strong contender to make it to the semifinals, while Independence has lost three of its last four regular-season games. The game can be heard on 1240 AM and 1590 AM out of Aberdeen.
– Recent history: Haven’t played the last three seasons.
– Independence: The Wildcats are averaging 17.1 points per game, while surrendering 21.7. … QB Londen Parker has completed 57 of 113 passes for 578 yards, 2 TDs and 7 INTs. He has rushed for close to 500 yards. … RB Rainey Tuggles is averaging 81.4 yards per game on the ground.

Kosciusko (5-6) at Shannon (9-1)
– Playoff seeds: Kosciusko is the third seed out of Division 4-4A, while Shannon is Division 1-4A’s second seed.
– Rankings: Shannon is the Daily Journal’s third-ranked large school.
– This week: Shannon looks to make another run to the state semifinals, while Kosciusko has won three in a row.
– Recent history: Kosciusko has won their only meeting in the last three seasons. The Whippets beat the Red Raiders 31-14 in a 2007 second-round playoff matchup.
– Kosciusko: The Whippets and the Red Raiders share a common opponent this season in Amory. Kosciusko beat Amory 27-7, while Shannon squeaked by in OT, 13-7. … The Whippets are averaging 19 ppg, while allowing 20.8. … RB John Kern has 166 carries for 1,151 yards.

– This week: Corinth bounced back from a close loss to top-ranked Booneville by beating Kossuth last week. The Warriors find will try to make another run deep into the playoffs.

– Leland: The Cubs are averaging 15.6 ppg, while allowing 21.1. … RB Donterrius Thomas is averaging 59 yards per game rushing. … DT Broderick Pordham is averaging 9 tackles per game.

– This week: Booneville High head coach Jim Drewry will become the winningest coach in Mississippi high school football if his team beats Marshall. Drewry enters tonight’s matchup with 343 career victories. He’s tied for the state lead with former Noxubee County, North Panola and Strider Academy coach Joe Bradshaw.

– This week: Two-time defending Class 4A champion Louisville was upset by Amory last week, while Pontotoc finished its regular season by beating North Pontotoc at home.
– Recent history: Haven’t played the last three seasons.
– Pontotoc: QB Canden Dallas cut his hand in last week’s game vs. North Pontotoc, but returned in the second half. … The Warriors’ defense held North Pontotoc to 18 yards of total offense in the first half, and limited the Vikings to 3 of 13 passing for 2 yards and 2 INTs in the game. … The Warriors two losses have come to Itawamba AHS and Shannon, two of the Daily Journal’s top-ranked large schools.
– Louisville: QB Chris Wraggs has completed 95 of 168 passes for 1,213 yards, 14 TDs and 6 INTs. – This week: Tupelo needs a victory and some help from Columbus – a win against Starkville – to qualify for the postseason. The Golden Wave has won two straight games under interim coach Lamar Aldridge, beating Horn Lake (40-13) and DeSoto Central (42-0).
– Recent history: Olive Branch has won the last three meetings, including last season’s 45-34 win.
– Tupelo: QB Luke Hobson was 0-for-6 passing in the first half against Horn Lake, but rallied in the second half to complete 2 of 3 for 72 yards, including a 49-yard TD strike to Terrill Pinson. … Hobson also kicked FGs of 31 and 34 yards. … RB McKenzie Tyler rushed for 106 yards on 21 carries and scored two TDs. One came on an 82-yard kickoff return. … THS has outscored its opponent 82-13 the last two weeks.
