McCoy, Darnell handle THS football on Sunny 93
Former Tupelo superintendent of schools Randy McCoy and former Ole Miss quarterback John Darnell will handle the radio broadcast duties this season for Tupelo Golden Wave football on 93.3 WSYE-FM.

The games can also be heard on the station’s website: www.sunny933fm.com.

McCoy, who returns for his second season in the booth, will handle the play-by-duties, while Darnell will be the analyst.

Darnell worked a few games last year with McCoy, but is scheduled to work every contest this season.

The broadcast kicks off with a 30-minute pregame show, featuring an interview with THS coach David Bradberry.

Golden Wave XC teams have busy meet schedule
Tupelo’s defending MHSAA Class 6A state champion boys and girls cross country teams will compete this fall in Alabama, Florida and Tennessee meets.

The Golden Wave, coached by Jonathan Begnaud and Anna Sloan, will participate in the annual Brooks Memphis Twilight Run, the Jesse Owens Classic in Oakville, Ala., and Gulf Coast XC Stampede in Pensacola, Fla.

Tupelo opens its season on Aug. 25 in the Tupelo Christian Prep Invitational. The team will also run in the Pontotoc Invitational and Saltillo Invitational, along with the Mississippi College Choctaw Open.

The Wave’s annual Tupelo Invitational is Oct. 20. The state meet is scheduled for Nov. 10 in Clinton.

Busy softball weekend scheduled for NEMiss
North Pontotoc is hosting one of Northeast Mississippi’s largest slow-pitch softball tournaments Saturday with a 20-game event at the New Albany SportsPlex.

The first games are scheduled for 10 a.m.

“Everybody gets to play somebody different, somebody they may not play during the season,” North Pontotoc coach Shane Mongomery said. “I try to balance the competition.”

Also, Saturday, the annual Monroe County Tournament is scheduled to be played in Smithville.

THS basketball boosters schedule pancake meal
The Tupelo High School boys basketball booster club is sponsoring a pancake breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Aug. 25 at Applebee’s in Tupelo.

Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the door or from players, coaches and boosters.
