An afternoon-long standoff at a house at New Road and Highway 6 ended just before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday after Steven Alton Brantley, 53, and David Little, 35, surrendered to Mississippi Highway Patrol SWAT team members and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Public Relations Officer Tanya Willems, Brantley had barricaded himself inside a home between Nettleton and Bigbee and refused to come out.

Willems said that the incident stemmed from an ongoing drug investigation.

At 5:03 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell pleaded through a bullhorn for anyone in the house to come out peacefully and with their hands raised.

“I am asking you to leave your weapons in the house and come out, please. We want to resolve this. We do not want to hurt you. We will not hurt you,” Cantrell said.

Traffic was diverted in the afternoon from Highway 6 during the incident.

No information on charges was available Wednesday night.
