ABBEVILLE – A U.S. Marine just days from finishing his four-year hitch was killed early Friday morning when his car was rear-ended on Highway 7 North near the Tallahatchie River bridge. The deceased man was identified as Samuel Spraberry, 22, of Oxford.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Joey Miller said MHP officers along with others from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department and other agencies are looking for the driver of a 2004 Taurus that hit Spraberry’s Toyota Corolla from behind as both were northbound on the highway, just north of Abbeville.

A passerby reporting the wreck to Lafayette County E-911 said the driver of the Taurus was a Hispanic male and left the scene on foot.

A family friend said Spraberry had served with the Marine Corps in Afghanistan and Japan and was about two weeks from his honorable discharge. He was planning to attend the University of Mississippi.

SAMUEL SPRABERRY was one of my Marines I took under my wing.
he was an excellent Marine. i loved every moment working with such a talented person.
    his famiily raised him right.
when I left Japan i missed working with such a motivated person.
he was a collateral duty inspector working on the ch-46e helicopters.
he was a avionics technician. and he was an all around BAD-ASS.
    brother you will be missed.
I cannot believe this happened to you. thank you for all the good times overseas
you always talked about your motocycle. and your friends and family back home.
even the good and bad while on leave. but we laughed about the good times.
i will miss you and god bless your family.
look out for us while ur in heaven.
    your friend,
