HMS students attend Beta convention

HOUSTON – The Houston Middle School Junior Beta Club recently attended the State Beta Convention in Tupelo. Sponsors Stacey Chapman, David Boatman, and Dianne Pullen accompanied 45 students to the BancorpSouth Arena where several competed in competitions.
Richard Murray competed in Math and won first place. Molly May competed in talent and also won first place. Both of these award winners were invited to compete at the National Beta Convention in Orlando, Florida in June.
The National Beta Club is a secondary school honor society in the United States.
It was founded in 1934 by Dr. John Harris, and is currently headquartered in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The club has more than 7,743 clubs in 44 states. There are more than 414,000 active Betas in the Senior and Junior divisions. Its motto is amp”Let Us Lead By Serving Others.amp” It is an honors program with an emphasis on community service.
The National Beta Club Senate authorized the institution of the Junior Division of the National Beta Club on July 22, 1961. The Junior Beta Club was originally chartered for 6th-9th grade students. In the summer of 1988, the Board of Directors agreed to allow 5th grade students into The Junior National Beta Club.
