Holiday open houses featured in downtowns

This is one of a continuing series of articles on Christmas traditions in Northeast Mississippi.

TUPELO – The traditional kickoff to downtown holiday shopping throughout the years has been the open house events.
Many towns hold their events before Thanksgiving, such as Baldwyn, Fulton, Houston, New Albany, Okolona, Oxford and Ripley.
The events are usually sponsored by the town’s Main Street Association or Chamber of Commerce.
In some cases, merchants have their own open houses.
The open houses are a time for shoppers to walk around in a festive atmosphere. Some shop, while others enjoy the event and get gift ideas for later. Santa usually makes an appearance at each event.
Downtown Tupelo had its annual North Pole Stroll this week. Fifteen downtown tenants welcomed visitors with free food, drinks and entertainment. A section of Main Street was closed for the night so a train could give free rides.
Downtown Amory hosts its open house Dec. 10.
