TUPELO – Gilpin Cleaners has been around since the 1940s, named for its founder, Willie Gilpin.

It was purchased by Benny Williams in 1974, and Larry Goddard bought it in 1984.

In fact, Goddard started working there as a senior in high school to earn some money before heading to college.

But Williams offered him a permanent job, and Goddard took it.

“I didn’t have a car, so I figured I’d stay for one year,” Goddard said. “It’s been 38 years since I started. … I never left.”

Williams offered the business to Goddard in and he bought it on Jan. 1, 1984. Goddard met his future wife, Vicki, later that year and married her the following year.

The business does dry cleaning, laundry, alterations, suede and leather service, wedding gown preservation. It also has a pickup-and-delivery service and is does the valet cleaning service for several area hotels.

The original location is in downtown Tupelo on Magazine Street, and the Goddards opened their second location on Barnes Crossing Road in 1993. Soon, they’ll be opening a third location, in the McCullough Crossing retail center on McCullough Boulevard.

“We prayed about it and thought about it a lot, and we felt like it would be a good time to open another location,” Larry Goddard said.
