Jacque Grayson represents the fifth generation of family owned and operated Grayson-Porter’s Mortuary in Tupelo. Founded in 1913 by J.W. Porter, the full-service funeral care business has been an icon on the corner of Spring and Franklin Streets.
Grayson’s mother, Valeria Porter Grayson, is the owner, and Jacque is the funeral director.
“It was a 24/7 operation then, just like it is now,” said Jacque Grayson.
She remembers watching her parents and other family members work in the business, so it was natural for her to get involved eventually as well.
“I grew up in it as a child – it’s always been a part of my life.”
Grayson-Porter’s mission is to set the highest standard in helping families during difficult times.
“We always try to treat each family as if they’re our own family,” she said. “I don’t see this as a job – I see this as a mission.”
She praised her staff, which she said was “compassionate, caring and dedicated to serving families.”
Grayson said there have been talks about expanding to a larger location. But it’s not a pressing issue.
“One reason why we like staying in this spot is I’ve found that people who have been gone 20 or 30 years know where we are,” she said. “If they’ve moved away they can come here; they know where we are.”
