OXFORD – Mayor Richard Howorth announced he will run for a second term, qualifying for the spring election late Tuesday afternoon.
In a prepared statement, Howorth said, “It has been very difficult to make the decision to attempt to do so again, primarily because I dislike the idea of politicians who never leave office.”
However, on the advice of many people in the community, he said he decided to run for one more term.
Owner of Square Books in Oxford, Howorth did not have previous public service experience when he defeated then-Mayor Pat Lamar for the post in 2001.
Howorth said if re-elected he will continue efforts to push economic development, emphasize community development and give more focus to issues such as transportation and affordable housing.
Thursday, Howorth was the only candidate to qualify for the position.
