TUPELO – The Tupelo-Lee Humane Society announced Friday it has selected The McCarty Company to design a new animal shelter and spay clinic.
The new facility will replace the current ones, which are cramped and outdated and which limit TLHS’s ability to meet the community’s growing needs.
The current shelter is located at 2400 S. Gloster St., the Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic is at 1504 S. Gloster.
“We are very excited to be working with The McCarty Company to begin the process of constructing a new animal shelter and spay clinic,” said Amanda Wallis, president of the TLHS board of directors, in a press release. “We’ve been planning this facility for quite some time and are very encouraged to be one step closer to achieving our goal. This facility will make such a positive difference in the lives of the animals we care for.”
The new facility will be constructed on approximately two acres of land located on Cliff Gookin Boulevard that was donated by Big Oaks Farm in August.
It’s estimated to cost $2.5 to $3 million, but officials will get a better idea of price after going through the design process. During that process, they’ll determine square footage and other facility features to accommodate the 150-200 animals they regularly house – in addition to the dozens they spay and neuter each week.
The shelter has nearly $500,000 in its capital project fund, and plans to launch a fundraising campaign later this year to get closer to its goal.
To help with the design, The McCarty Co. has engaged the consulting services of Animal Arts, a nationally recognized specialist in animal shelter design located in Boulder, Colo.
“The McCarty Company-Design Group is extremely pleased to have been selected by the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society to design their new shelter,” said CEO Richard McCarty in a press release. “As a true animal lover, I consider it an honor to help create a healthy and efficient environment for both the animals and the staff that care for them. We look forward to working with them to achieve their goals.”
