I-55 graffiti will cost state $9K to replace signs

JACKSON — Graffiti messages on three Interstate 55 signs in Jackson will cost the state $9,000.

State transportation officials tell The Clarion-Ledger that’s the price tag to replace the signs.

The phrase “Live in this moment” was painted on one exit sign. The other two vandalized signs, hanging less than two miles north, bear “This is the path we take” and a wavy line in white paint.

Mississippi Department of Transportation spokeswoman Carrie Adams says MDOT isn’t sure which sign was vandalized first, but that the graffiti likely happened overnight because traffic cameras did not capture footage of the culprit. Officials believe the culprit climbed up the signs’ poles, across their metal catwalks and over oncoming traffic.

The signs will be replaced in spring 2011.
