Ida Street apartment complex catches fire

TUPELO – The Tupelo Fire Department is investigating a fire that destroyed an Ida Street apartment Friday night.
Capt. William Avery said the fire started in the kitchen area of an apartment at Meadow Creek Apartments, at 1525 Ida Street, destroying unit 254.
Flames and black smoke could be seen billowing from the roof of the two-story, six-unit building. Even though the fire was contained in 254, Avery said it is possible other units may have been damaged by smoke and water.
No one was in the apartment at the time the fire started. Several of the more than 100 onlookers said food was left cooking on the stove, which could have caused the fire.
There were reports that lightening may have struck the building, but firemen at the scene dismissed those rumors, saying the fire started from inside the unit.
With steady rainfall to aid the firemen in fighting the fire, the flames were under control quickly.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
