Illegal gun purchase indictment revealed

ABERDEEN – Efrem Smith faces federal charges he conspired and purchased three firearms through a straw buyer in West Point.
Smith, 25, who reportedly has a felony conviction, will face formal charges Aug. 2 before Magistrate Judge David Sanders in Aberdeen.
His three-count indictment alleges that Smith solicited his cousin, who lived in Aberdeen, to purchase three pistols. The cousin was not charged in the indictment.
Smith allegedly returned to Illinois with the pistols.
If convicted on all counts, Smith faces up to 25 years in prison and $750,000 in fines.
Smith was indicted last March but the details were not made public until this week.
