Immigrant sues over lost custody of child in Miss.

JACKSON — The Southern Poverty Law Center has filed a federal lawsuit accusing Mississippi officials of conspiring to take an illegal immigrant’s child so the infant could be adopted by an American couple.

SPLC legal director Mary Bauer says Cirila Baltazar Cruz was separated from her daughter for a year, and the child was returned in 2009.

Bauer says Cruz’ constitutional rights to family integrity were violated. Bauer says Cruz’ civil rights also were violated when she wasn’t given access to an interpreter who spoke her native language, Chatino.

The suit names the Mississippi Department of Human Services, Singing River Hospital Systems and others. MDHS and hospital officials didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
