TUPELO – TNA’s Impact Wrestling will broadcast live from the BancorpSouth Arena on May 9, complete with stars like Hulk Hogan, Sting and the newest wrestler, Joseph Park.
“It’s been 11 years since we’ve had a televised live event here,” said BancorpSouth Arena’s executive director, Todd Hunt.
Fans will really get two shows for the price of one. The live broadcast will be 7-9 p.m. May 9, and after the live broadcast is over, Impact Wrestling will tape another episode that will air the following week.
“Impact Wrestling is seen by over 5 million people in over 100 countries in 14 languages,” said Michael Weber, TNA Entertainment’s vice president of marketing. “This is truly a global product and it’s good for a city like Tupelo that doesn’t get global attention.”
More than 40 wrestlers will be brought in for the show, and Impact Wrestling will bring in another 100 people as support staff. They’ll hire another 40 local workers to set the stage up and tear it down, Weber said.
Impact Wrestling hosted a press conference announcing the show at the arena on Tuesday morning, where they gave tickets to local chapters of the Boys & Girls Clubs.
Park was also on hand, and he spoke about how his character made the transition from being a lawyer to becoming a wrestler. Park gave a heavyweight championship belt to another lawyer, Mayor Jack Reed Jr., at the press conference.
“I’ll leave office July 1, so I may need something else to keep me busy,” Reed joked. “(Park) may be my new role model.”
This will be Impact Wrestling’s fifth show on the road, and Park said he’s looking forward to the Tupelo event.
“I know Hulk Hogan and Sting are excited about performing in front of a traditional wrestling audience,” he said. “It’s an honor to perform in front of an audience like that.”
