Islamic Center of Tupelo to move

TUPELO – After two years in its current location, the Islamic Center of Tupelo is relocating.
On Nov. 15 members of the mosque plan to close on a building located one block north of its current home on West Jackson Street. The mosque’s new address will be 783 Poplarville St., the former home of Tupelo Cheer Academy.
According to lay leader Ali Almasri, mosque members wanted to find a permanent home and to purchase a building, and they realized the space they’d been renting since November of 2009 wasn’t going to work out.
Since they’ll own the new facility, members plan to install a space for performing the ritual of wudu, or the washing Muslims undertake before prayer. They also plan to make a bigger space for family gatherings.
The members hope to be moved into their new space by late November.
The Islamic Center of Tupelo draws some 50 Muslim families from around Northeast Mississippi each week. The biggest gatherings are for midday prayer on Friday and on Sundays for Quran study.
