FULTON – Suicide is suspected in the death of a Union County man found dead in the Evergreen community last week.
According to Itawamba County Sheriff Chris Dickinson, it appears the gunshot wound that ended the life of Stephen Bullwinkle, 33, was likely self-inflicted. Although the body will undergo an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, the sheriff said burn marks around the entry point of the bullet indicate the gun was fired at point-blank range.
Bullwinkle’s body was found in the middle of New Chapel Road about 12:45 p.m. on Feb. 23. According to the unidentified individual who made the discovery, Bullwinkle was alive and suffering from a single gunshot wound to his chest. By the time deputies arrived moments later, he was dead.
Bullwinkle was a suspect in a home invasion that occurred in Tippah County earlier that morning.
The investigation is ongoing.
