IUKA – A 66-year-old Iuka man was being held in the Tishomingo

IUKA – A 66-year-old Iuka man was being held in the Tishomingo County Jail Monday for questioning in a shooting death that occurred Sunday near J.P. Coleman Park.

It is the first fatal shooting to occur this year in Tishomingo County.

Tony Smith, 41, of Booneville was shot once in the side with a .22-caliber rifle. He died about an hour after the shooting at Iuka’s hospital.

Edward “Boots” White, 66, was picked up at his home shortly after the incident. No charges have been levied against White.

The shooting occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Steel Bridge area near Pickwick Lake and J.P. Coleman State Park.

The two men got into a heated discussion and White allegedly shot Smith with the rifle. After the shooting, Smith was taken to a nearby store where medical personnel were summoned.

Authorities have a motive in the shooting, but would not release that information Monday.
