IUKA – An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of a late afternoon fire Monday that destroyed a discount merchandise business.
The Bluebird Variety Store, located at the intersection of Old Highway 72 and Old Highway 25, was destroyed by a fire that collapsed the roof of the building, the Tishominigo County News reported.
Fire Chief Brian Grissom said the call came into the fire station just before 5:30 p.m. Monday that smoke was coming from the roof. Though four volunteer fire departments responded, the roof collapsed before the fire could be extinguished, the report said.
The building, built in the 1970s or 1980s, was rented by a local businesswoman, and was often referred to as the bent-and-dent store.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but the state arson investigator was on site this week.
