NEW ALBANY – Recently captured fugitive and accused child abuser Janet Barreto will be formally charged next week with another felony, tampering with a witness.
Barreto and her husband, Ramon, arrived at the Union County Jail on Sunday after five years on the run for a combined 25 counts of federal and state crimes, arrested last week at a mall in Portland, Oregon by the U.S. Marshals Service.
Neither Barreto had an attorney Monday, said Union County Circuit Clerk Phyllis Stanford.
The Barretos are accused of a litany of crimes associated with their biological children and others adopted from South America. They were arrested in 2008 after a two-year-old adopted child died at their home. Janet Barreto is accused of tampering with a witness when calling her biological daughter in 2008, who was in jail and later admitted to killing the child in a fit of rage.
No trial date has been set for either the husband or wife.
