Judge discounts former teacher’s claims

Court NewsTUPELO – A former Tupelo school teacher’s age discrimination lawsuit was thrown out of federal court this week for lack of supporting proof.

Mary Alice Stennett of Tupelo sued Tupelo Public School District in April 2012 claiming that during her 20 years with the district she was passed over, lost her job and was not rehired for other jobs because the district preferred younger people.

U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock’s ruling stated that Stennett failed to prove she was better qualified than others whom the district hired for jobs she sought.

She also said that years of experience do not establish better qualifications.

In its defense, TPSD said Stennett was not as qualified as others who ultimately were hired.
