MEMPHIS — A Memphis police dog critically injured when he was stabbed 10 times while helping capture a burglary suspect is getting a belated Christmas present.
Gunner, a 6-year-old German shepherd, is on the list for a custom-fitted protective vest designed to protect him from getting stabbed again.
It will come courtesy of Susan Jean of Socorro, N.M., who runs a nonprofit agency that has provided vests for 500 police dogs in 39 states.
Gunner, who is back on the job after two months of recovery, was hurt helping officers last year nab a burglary suspect wanted for assault.
The man who stabbed the canine officer, Kenneth Hayes, was sentenced last month to 41 years in prison on various charges, including four years for attempting to kill an animal over the value of $1,000.
