KOSSUTH – Kossuth defeated Holly Springs 33-13 Friday night to complete the program’s third unbeaten regular season.
Aggies first-year coach Brian Kelly was a member of Kossuth’s last unbeaten team in 1998. The previous Aggies team to complete a regular season unbeaten was the 1957 squad.
“It was real big for us last week to clinch the division (1-3A),” Kelly said. “This week we wanted to finish the regular season undefeated.”
Kossuth beat Alcorn Central 54-0 last week to win the division.
“Our kids have been focused all season and they worked their tails off in the offseason. They play hard and they play together.”
Kossuth (10-0, 5-0) plays host to M.S. Palmer next week in the opening round of the 3A state playoffs.
Aggies quarterback Jay Vanderford threw TD passes of 7 yards to Tyler Pittman, 19 yards to David Gibson and 26 yards to Heath Wood. Vanderford also scored on a 2-yard run.
Gibson scored Kossuth’s first touchdown on a 6-yard run in the first quarter. Holly Springs (4-6, 2-3) answered with a 7-yard Tevin Jones run.
In the third quarter, Holly Springs scored again on 53-yard run by Jones.
