After more than two decades of disuse, the small stretch of Mississippi railway line that crosses Highway 178 near Fulton’s ICC campus is being pulled away.
The short railroad crossing lies between Spring and Cummings streets in Fulton, near the main entrance to the community college campus. It’s crossed dozens of times each day.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation was conducting the removal process Tuesday morning. A short detour was in place for those traveling down Main Street toward the ICC campus.
According to Fulton Street Department Director Stacy Smith, who proposed the project, the crevice left by the track’s removal will be temporarily filled and later be paved.
He said the railroad track was a long-existing eyesore.
