TUPELO – A Lee County man charged Friday with sexual battery after he was accused of having sex with an 11-year-old could face further charges as investigators analyze his computer and video equipment.
Randolph A. Jones, 26, of 883 County Road 1451, is being held on $100,000 bond at the Tupelo-Lee County Jail. Justice Court Judge Rickey Thompson set his bond Monday but said it's unlikely Jones will be released because the suspect has a hold on his record from a previous felony.
That felony came earlier this year after Jones failed to register as a sex offender when he moved to Lee County from Grenada County, where he had been charged in 2001 for touching a child for lustful purpose, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Department. He was on probation from that offense.
Sheriff Jim Johnson said his investigators have been working on the case for about two weeks after receiving a call from the 11-year-old's family, who had suspected sexual abuse. Investigators speculate the crimes had been going on for quite some time, based on interviews with the child.
They are analyzing video equipment, still cameras and computer equipment seized from Jones.
He does not believe, however, that other children were involved, he said.
Jones' case now goes before the grand jury, which reconvenes in March.
