Lee County man appeals murder conviction of grandfather

JACKSON — The state Court of Appeals on Tuesday rejected the appeal of Brett Jones of Lee County, who was convicted of murdering his grandfather in an argument over a phone bill.

Jones was seeking a new trial on grounds that his attorneys should’ve presented more evidence to show the killing was self-defense.

Jones is serving a life sentence from Lee County. He was convicted in the 2004 death of Bertis Jones, who died at home in Shannon after being stabbed repeatedly with a steak knife.

A judge denied his post-conviction petition in 2009.

Brett Jones said if an accurate layout of the kitchen had been provided, the jury would’ve seen he was trapped by his grandfather and had no way to escape.
