TUPELO – Lee County Schools will begin the next school year during the first week of August.
The district approved its 2011-12 calendar at Tuesday’s school board meeting. Classes will start on Thursday, Aug. 4 and end on May 22.
Student holidays will be Labor Day (Sept. 5), Columbus Day (Oct. 10), Thanksgiving (Nov. 21-25), Christmas (Dec. 19-Jan. 3), Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 16), President’s Day (Feb. 20), Spring Break (March 12-16) and Easter (April 6-9).
Because Christmas falls on a Sunday, students will have 18 days of Christmas break: the week before the holiday, the week after and then the first Monday and Tuesday in January.
Graduation is scheduled for May 19, but non-seniors will return for two days of classes.
The calendar denotes seven 60 percent days during which students will be dismissed so that teachers can have time for various meetings and training programs. Those days are Aug. 24, Sept. 28, Oct. 26, Nov. 16, Jan. 25, Feb. 22 and March 28.
Teachers also will have four days of professional development before the year begins.
Kindergarten through fifth-grade teachers must choose two days to report to school between July 11-15. Sixth to 12th-grade educators must do so for two days between July 18-22.
All teachers in the district will work on Aug. 2 and 3. Other professional development days are Jan. 3 and May 23.
