Lee plant to expand, add 107 jobs

City, county and economic development officials aren’t commenting, but it appears an expansion of MTD Products is imminent.
And the expansion could add more than 100 jobs.
On Wednesday, Rep. Travis Childers, D-Miss., announced that a $300,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission had been awarded for infrastructure improvements in the Tupelo-Lee Industrial Park South.
While MTD is not specifically named, a press release from Childers’ office says “Lee County owns a vacant building located in the industrial park, and a local manufacturer wants to expand its operations and lease the county-owned facility to use for the fabrication and assembly of lawn mower platforms.”
MTD is the only company in the industrial park that fits that description.
MTD’s brands include Cub Cadet, Cub Cadet Commercial, Cub Cadet Yanmar, Troy-Bilt, White Outdoor, Yard-Man, Yard Machines, Bolens, Arnold, GardenWay, MTD Pro and MTD Gold.
However, officials declined to say if MTD is the company that’s expanding.
“We have no comment on any projects we may or may not be working on,” said Shane Homan of the Community Development Foundation.
Officials with MTD could not be reached.
According to Childers’ statement, the ARC grant will go along with $5.5 million in private investment.
The ARC money will be used to install a fire suppression system and replace about 100,000 square feet of the roof of the vacant building.
In addition, the state is providing another $1.2 million while “local sources” will pitch in another $721,700 for the project.
