TUPELO – Lee County Schools Transportation Director Ralph Capps resigned from his job Friday.
Capps had been on administrative leave since April 17, the day Lee County Schools Business Manager Randy Thweatt was arrested on charges of embezzling. He had been on unpaid leave since April 24.
Thweatt pleaded guilty on Sept. 5 to two counts of embezzlement. The 2006 Ford Ranger pickup truck that Thweatt was charged with embezzling was signed over to him by Capps, according to records obtained by the Daily Journal.
Capps signed the document transferring ownership of the truck to Thweatt on Feb. 16 of this year. He told the Daily Journal in May that he signed the document as the seller because he was told to so by Thweatt, whom he referred to as his boss.
Capps could not be reached for comment on Friday. Lee County Superintendent Jimmy Weeks declined comment.
The district’s school board held a personnel hearing for Capps on Thursday evening and voted then to accept his letter of resignation. Capps submitted the letter on Friday.
Judy Hill has been serving as the district’s interim transportation director, and Weeks said she will remain in that role for now. He said the district will begin determining how it will fill the position long term.
