Legislature receives ballot initiatives

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann has delivered three statewide ballot initiatives to the Mississippi Legislature.

Hosemann delivered the initiatives on Tuesday during the first day of the session. The proposals would require photo identification at polling places and a constitutional amendment that states life begins at conception. A third would prohibit state and local government from taking private land through use of eminent domain to give to another person or business.

Supporters gathered enough certified signatures to place the initiatives on the ballot in November. Lawmakers have the option of offering alternatives to the proposals. That’s a decision that will be made during the session.
