CALHOUN CITY – Noxubee County overcame a 46-34 halftime deficit and a double-double performance from Mississippi State signee D.J. Gardner to pick up a 73-69 victory over Okolona in the Loggins Classic at Calhoun City High School on Saturday.
Noxubee outscored Okolona 20-11 in the third quarter to pull within three points, 57-54, before taking the lead for good in the final minutes of the contest.
Daquarius Mallard led the Tigers with 23 points, Earnest Hunter 16, Howard Spoon 14, and Terence Barron added 10 points. Gardner scored 38 and grabbed 10 rebounds for Okolona while Verdell Judd added 12 points.
– Calhoun City 81, Coffeeville 66: The Wildcats capped off the day’s games with the victory despite the absence of starting forward J.R. Jennings, who was playing in the Bernard Blackwell Classic All-Star football game. They led 44-30 at halftime.
Taborris Coffey led five Calhoun City double-figure scorers with 15 points. Damarius Howard scored 14, Tavion Primer 11, Adonte Phillip 11 and Traveous Moore 10. Dannie Smith scored a game-high 28 while Keldrick Hooper added 16 for the Pirates.
– Oxford 79, Nettleton 68: The Chargers jumped out to a 16-7 lead in the first quarter and led 46-26 at halftime. Nettleton battled back in the second half to outscore Oxford 44-33, but it wasn’t enough.
JaMarious Taylor and Romeo Johnson led Oxford with 13 points. Odarius Lowe scored a game-high 17 and Zack Ross added 15 for Nettleton.
– Bruce 66, Lafayette 46: The Trojans continued their hot streak behind a 23-point effort for Jarvis Tillman and 19 points from his brother Devin.
Kurgan Tyson paced the ‘Dores with 13 points.
– Water Valley 67, Eupora 53: Fred McGee paced the Blue Devils with 16 in the victory, while DeShawn Starks scored 18 for Eupora.
