Lott to back Dole in GOP race

U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., has thrown his support behind fellow Sen. Bob Dole for the Republican presidential nomination.

Lott, the majority whip in the Senate, had earlier backed Texas Sen. Phil Gramm in the GOP race but Gramm withdrew prior to the New Hampshire primary after poor showings in Louisiana and Iowa.

Lott joins Thad Cochran, Mississippi’s senior U.S. senator, in backing Dole, the majority leader in the Senate. The three hold the top three positions in the Senate leadership. Dole holds the No. 1 post as majority leader, Lott is No. 2 as majority whip and Cochran serves in the No. 3 slot as chairman of the Senate Republican Conference.

Cochran also serves as co-chairman of Dole’s campaign in the South.

The announcement that Lott had endorsed Dole came in a news release from the Dole campaign Monday. Lott could not be reached for comment.
