GULFPORT – A 73-year-old Louisiana man has been sentenced to 20 years for manslaughter in the fatal shooting of Sonya Nelson, 42, of Gulfport, on July 13, 2009.
A Harrison County jury deliberated about five hours Thursday and was unable to reach a verdict on an indicted charge of murder.
The judge suspended 10 years, leaving 10 to serve.
Nelson, from Alexandria, La., had rented a room in Slagle’s home
Nelson was running a ceiling fan and Slagle was upset about the cost of electricity, Fisher said. The two struggled over a gun. Two shots were fired, one of which struck her in the stomach.
