Lowndes Co. sheriff retiring

By The Associated Press

COLUMBUS — Lowndes County Sheriff Butch Howard says he will not run for re-election this year.

Howard tells The Commercial Dispatch that there’s no single reason for his retirement.

The 65-year-old Howard has served three terms as sheriff. The candidate qualifying deadline is March 1.

Howard says it’s time for him to take another direction in life. He says he has 30 years in state retirement and economically it is a good time for him to retire.

He says he will spend some time hunting and fishing and may go looking for another job in the future.
