Lowndes man wounded in shootout with deputies

COLUMBUS — A man wanted for pulling a gun on a relative was wounded Monday in a shootout with Lowndes County deputies, says Sheriff Butch Howard.

Howard says deputies had been looking for John Rogers Montgomery since Sunday and found him at his mobile home in western Lowndes County.

Howard says when deputies tried to arrest Montgomery, shots rang out and Montgomery was wounded.

Howard says relatives told deputies that Montgomery suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and had been off his medication for some time.

Montgomery was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. His condition was unknown.

No deputies were injured.

Howard says Montgomery allegedly pulled a gun on a relative Sunday but fled into the woods when deputies were called.

Howard says the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation.
