Court asked to tap special judge for Melton case
n JACKSON – Three Hinds County circuit judges on Friday recused themselves from handling Jackson Mayor Frank Melton’s probation violations case.
The recusals by Judges Swan Yerger, Bobby Delaughter and Winston Kidd came a day after the state Supreme Court removed the county’s other circuit judge, Tomie Green, from the Melton case.
Yerger asked the high court to appoint a special judge.
State law provides that the state Supreme Court’s chief justice, with the consent of a majority of the other justices, can appoint a special judge on a temporary basis in the event of an emergency.
Green had ordered Melton arrested after the flamboyant mayor was accused of violating his probation by breaking curfew during a late-night bar raid with police and traveling out of state for surgery.
