TUPELO – Tupelo Police Officer Joseph Maher is out of the Intensive Care Unit and in a private room at the North Mississippi Medical Center.
Tupelo Police Chief Bart Aguirre said Maher’s wife reported he has greatly improved over the lat two days and was able to walk some with assistance today.
Maher was shot by a fleeing suspect when responding to Monday’s bank robbery on South Gloster Street.
Sgt. Kevin “Gale” Stauffer was shot and killed during the same exchange of gunfire. Stauffer was buried in the Tupelo Memorial Park Cemetery today.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, FBI and other law enforcement agencies are continuing to investigate the bank robbery and subsequent shooting.
When asked about a possible suspect in Chicago, Highway Patrol Trooper Ray Hall said he can’t release anything and no formal charges have been filed but they are following some good leads.
