TUPELO – The Major Thoroughfare Committee today unanimously approved a list of road projects for its next five-year phase.
The list was nearly identical to the one proposed last month, except for the addition of West Jackson Street. It’s slated to be widened to three lanes from Coley Road to Air Park Road.
Widening South Gloster Street is listed as an alternative project in the next phase but not among the top priorities. That’s because the committee hopes to do the project in the current phase. If it can’t, though, it will be able to move it to the top of the list.
The City Council attended the meeting, which lasted two and a half hours. They joined the discussion about the next phase, as well as whether the group should divert money from the program to smaller road improvements.
They also debated whether to use some money for neighborhood redevelopment.
In all, the next phase will include $20 million worth of projects including: Widening a portion of Eason Boulevard, East Main Street, Thomas Street, West Jackson Street and Veterans Boulevard. It also will add right-hand turn lanes on North Gloster Street near the mall and designate 2.5 mills – $5 million – for small street improvements recommended by the city.
The council must approve the plan before it goes before city residents for a vote.
