OXFORD – Lafayette County Sheriff’s officers arrested a Water Valley man on Wednesday after he allegedly fired a shotgun at a passerby from a business on Highway 6 West.

James Dean Winters, 25, of 1501 Elkford St., was charged with aggravated assault and felon in possession of a firearm after the incident. Sheriff’s Investigator Alan Wilburn said no motive was immediately evident for the shooting and that because of the distance and a backpack the victim was wearing, the victim was not injured.

Winters was denied bond, having already been given bond for an unrelated charge in another county. The felon-in-possession charge is connected to Winters’ prior felony conviction in Arkansas for theft of property, Wilburn said.
