Man charged in Columbus shooting waives court appearance

COLUMBUS — The case against a California man charged in the shooting deaths of two men at a Columbus nightclub in February will go to a Lowndes County grand jury after he waived his right to a preliminary hearing in city court this past week.

Daniel Paul Copple of Lucerne Valley, Calif., is charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of James Bennett Mann of Columbus and Mark Caudill of Birmingham, Ala., at the Elbow Room pub in downtown Columbus on Feb. 16.

Prosecutors tell the Commercial Dispatch that Copple is s also charged with aggravated assault for allegedly hitting a pedestrian with his truck and leaving the scene shortly before the shooting.

Copple is currently in jail on a $3 million bond.
